SCHOOLS Minister Ed Balls was in Wallsend today to formally open the brand new £10m Beacon Hill School and Specialist College for Business and Enterprise.

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families was given a guided tour of the purpose built state-of-the-art facility and was introduced to the pupils.

The school will cater for 130 pupils aged from two to 19 with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties, and autism spectrum disorders.

Funded by North Tyneside Council and developed in partnership with parents and the local community, its specialist facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, soft play and sensory rooms, a trampoline area for rebound therapy, a multi-use games area, music and drama suites, and bespoke teaching areas.

Paragon Carpets of South Yorkshire provided the Workspace Loop carpet tiles that finished off the £10m development project giving a fantastic look ot this high tech building and learning centre.

Workspace Loop the market leading commercial carpet tile product was chosen due to its high wear characteristics and premium loop pile appearance.

Headteacher Helen Jones said: "Our mission is to inspire, challenge and educate.

"The official opening of our new school building by the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families marks an exciting phase in the development of Beacon Hill and we are looking forward to an extremely bright future."

The multi-million pound investment in Beacon Hill forms part of North Tyneside's successful Inclusive Education Strategy – the authority was recently recognised as being one of only ten National Hubs of Best Practice in the country.

North Tyneside Mayor John Harrison said: "We are committed to maximising the learning and life-chances of every single child in this borough.

"This world-class learning environment is the very best place for these pupils to discover and extend their capabilities, and to prepare them for life after school."

As well as being accredited by the National Autistic Society, the school has already attracted high praise from the Chief Inspector of Schools and Oftsed.
