All You Need to Know About Biophilic Interior Design

What is biophilic design?

Biophilic design incorporates aspects of nature into a building, artwork, or any other concept, to inspire feelings of calm and relaxation.

The theory is that humans are hardwired to be more at ease when in nature. Trees, mountains, rivers and waves all soothe the nerves and remove stress, helping us to feel ‘at-one’ with ourselves and our environment.

In built up inner-city environments, often, the next best thing to real-life nature is for our surroundings to simulate patterns and experiences from the natural world, and that’s where biophilic design comes in.

Why is biophilic design important?

With the ever-increasing population of cities, the benefits of biophilic design are clear to see across a wide variety of sectors, from offices, retail and even educational and healthcare environments.

Many believe that biophilic interior design can increase productivity and employee wellness. In retail, such designs could improve rental income, alongside providing a better shopping experience for customers. In education, biophilic design for schools may also improve the concentration levels of students and improve attendance levels.

How can I incorporate biophilic design into my next project?

Although the concept of increased connectivity with the outside environment inside of a building is by no means a new concept, the popularity of biophilic interior design has increased dramatically over recent years within the architecture and design community.

Examples include increasing the use of plants and foliage throughout a building, having living walls, incorporating indoor gardens, having a natural exterior and increasing the use of glass.

However, smaller changes can also provide the allure of nature, including the use of natural lighting systems and textures throughout.

For biophilic design to work as a complete concept for the built environment, all elements of a building need to be considered – not just the architecture and structure, with furniture and finishings also playing a crucial role.

To provide interior biophilic design throughout, floor coverings can be an ingenious, cost effective way to bring nature inside. Depending on the finish required, there are a host of carpet tiles that are able to deliver an idyllic biophilic finish to any building.

Here are just a couple of examples that work perfectly:

  • The Vapour range, which delivers a textured feel to the floor. Its range of shades echo those of nature, with everything from mossy woodland to earthy brown inspired tones.

  • Our Inspiration Collection draws on themes from the natural world such as flora and fauna, the tide, tree bark and animal patterns, all of which create a stunning finish with calming tones to complement.

To sum up, biophilic design is a wider movement within design and architecture, to incorporate patterns and sensations found in nature with the goal of providing peace and relaxation in interior spaces.

Biophilic interior design can be used as a strategic tool to enhance any space with focus points, inspiring patterns and clean lines. With personal wellness, mental health and wellbeing becoming increasingly important within society, biophilic design is taking the stage within the interiors sector, and leading the way toward creating healthy and productive internal spaces for modern humans.
