Does commercial carpet make a room warmer?

By 25th October 2022 No Comments

With rising energy costs, many schools and businesses might be feeling the pinch this winter. But how does commercial carpet fit into all of this, and can it make a room warmer?

How does carpet affect room temperature?

A well-made and properly fitted commercial carpet can help to make the temperature of a room warmer by retaining heat. This is because carpet fibres are very good natural insulators with low heat conduction values. When a commercial carpet is made, it’s woven from millions of fibres which trap air and heat to keep room temperatures warmer for much longer.

Does carpet help to insulate a classroom?

As explained in the previous section, commercial carpet is a great insulator, which can be particularly beneficial to classrooms and schools.. Hard flooring such as wood or tiles keeps the air surrounding them cool, while carpet does the opposite. Additionally to this, a commercial carpet acts as a barrier between the heat in the classroom and the floor beneath – the same way a blanket would work to keep you warm! There is also the option to add further cushioning and insulation to the backing which can help to keep classrooms even more cosy in winter.

What’s more, even at low temperatures, commercial carpets will feel warm underfoot and to touch. This is particularly important for children who have carpeted learning, and often spend a lot of time sitting on the floor.

Could commercial carpet help to lower your heating costs?

Retaining heat in a building is one of the many ways to contribute towards energy efficiency. So, by installing commercial carpet you could actually be saving money by not needing to use the same amount of heating. In fact, it’s thought that 10% of a room’s heat that would be lost through hard flooring can be retained by a carpet. While this may not seem like a huge amount, it could make a huge difference when it comes to reducing bills throughout schools or other businesses.

How much could commercial carpet save you in the long run?

It’s been estimated that buildings with carpet could expect to pay eight to thirteen percent less per month in heating costs!

The transition periods between seasons are when you might notice the biggest energy savings. Often those with commercial carpet can turn on their heating systems much later than those with hard flooring. This is particularly useful around September/October time when schools and businesses start thinking about putting their heating back on for winter. Additionally, this will also reduce carbon emissions and help you become more sustainable.
