How we’re helping to recycle ocean plastic

By 8th June 2023 No Comments

Did you know that there are an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of ocean plastic in our seas? We’re passionate about preserving our planet for many years to come, and with oceans covering 71% of the earth’s surface, it’s more important than ever to minimise waste in these delicate ecosystems.

We believe that a large part of reducing the amount of ocean plastic in our seas worldwide is to reduce, reuse, and recycle wherever we can. In this blog, we’ll talk about one of the innovations we’ve utilised to manufacture some of our carpet tiles: ECONYL® Yarn.

What is ECONYL Yarn?

The ECONYL® fibre is 100% regenerated and regenerable yarn made from plastic waste materials such as production discards, industrial components and fishing nets.

Why does ECONYL Yarn help reduce ocean plastic?

ECONYL Yarn recycles waste which might otherwise end up in our oceans. It also helps to rid the sea of existing ocean plastic such as old fishing nets, which can trap wildlife and further endanger the ecosystem. What’s more, it’s highly sustainable, having nearly 50% fewer emissions per kilogram of yarn compared to other options such as Nylon 6.

How are we using ECONYL Yarn?

We’ve utilised ECONYL Yarn in our Total Contrast range, making it one of our most environmentally friendly ranges. This striking carpet tile range is ideal for many different commercial sectors such as education, offices, leisure facilities and more. Once laid, our Total Contrast collection gives a unique, asymmetrical look to any project and provides a new dimension to your commercial space.

How else are our carpet tiles sustainable?

As we put the environment at the forefront of everything we do, we’re constantly looking for ways to minimise the impact that we have. Almost 80% of all our carpet tiles are manufactured using recycled material. We’ve also created a specialised ‘Envirobase’ backing which is manufactured from a minimum of 75% recycled content.
